Before you head off and sign up for a dozen different credit card discounts programs, there are some things you should consider first. The most important one is not to loose sight of the bigger picture. Sure, you might be saving a few percent on your purchase today, but are you going to pay the bill in full each month? Or, like many people, is it going to build up until the card is "maxed" and just sit there? That's no way to save money. You need to make sure you have a plan for paying off the purchase and a way to stick to the plan...otherwise, the best way to save money is to skip that purchase until you can actually afford it.

Another thing to keep in mind is convenience. Often the deals that the credit card companies make with the retailers come with a mound of restrictions and limitations written by a whole room full of lawyers whose job is to minimize the impact of the discount on the retailer. You can easily get so frustrated by the hoops you have to jump through that the discount becomes meaningless and more of a hassle than it is worth. Remember, just like in Vegas, the game always favors he who makes the rules.

The real trick here is to beat them at their own game. Look for cards that give discounts on the one or two things that your lifestyle makes important. Gasoline discounts for a Soccer Mom, office supply discounts for a small business owner, travel discounts for the jet-setter. Shop carefully for the card that will actually work best for you without changing your spending habits and preferred brands...and then make sure you are paying off the credit cards every month!
